Smishing Attacks

Cyber-attacks are growing at alarming rates every day. These can be defined as any offensive intrusion which affects computer systems, infrastructures, computer networks, or personal computer devices.  There are different types of cyber-attacks such as viruses, hacking attempts, trojans, and also the lesser-known concept of phishing attacks. Smishing is a phishing cybersecurity attack carried out over mobile text messaging and email.  In smishing attacks, a convincing message is used to trick targeted recipients and make them click malicious links. The consequence is unintended sharing of private information into or downloading malicious programs to a smartphone.

Methods to avoid these phishing scams or at least be guarded against them include,

  • Being Informed about Latest Phishing Techniques
  • Think well before clicking any link in random emails and instant messages
  • Install anti-phishing tools in browsers and or systems.
  • Update security patches in software and browsers
  • Use Firewalls
  • Use help from a cybersecurity maintenance company

Good news is that law enforcement agencies are making a series of arrests in recent times. But despite that, smishing attacks continue to thrive.  In the IC3 Report of 2021, the FBI added Smishing to its calculations. The report calculated that smishing led to losses in excess of $54 million.

The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning about a new smishing scheme targeting millions of smartphones nationwide/ According to verified reports, malicious elements impersonate state workforce agencies in an attempt to obtain personal data. Such threats must be dealt with seriously. It is highly recommended that you take the necessary precautions and contact a technological expert such as SGS Technologie immediately.
