Microsoft Silverlight is the latest of the legacy applications that will be discontinued. The end of support data has been announced as 5th October 2021. That is, nearly two years from now. The core reasons for this are believed to be vulnerabilities in media plugins along with consecutive cyber attacks (Silverlight was a victim in 2014). Microsoft has thus initiated the need for developers to find a newer and better alternative to Silverlight. It is not supported by modern browsers anymore. Google Chrome ended support for Silverlight in September 2015 and Firefox in March 2017.

What is Silverlight?

Silverlight is a deprecated application framework for writing and running rich web applications like Adobe Flash. It uses the XAML coding format and Microsoft’s Dot NET Framework for development. This framework also offers support for Windows Media Video (WMV) and Audio (WMA), H.264 video, Advanced Audio Coding, and more. Hence, the Silverlight framework was mainly used to display multimedia content on the web.

What is the Alternative?

Angular JS is the recommended alternative to Silverlight. It is an open-source web app development framework that is managed and maintained by Google along with a large community of coders. Being open-source, AngularJS provides several options which are continuously supported by multiple browsers and hosting platforms. In addition, the low migration cost along with long-term value give advantage to process of migrating from Silverlight to Angular JS. It is rapidly rising in popularity as Angular JS offers development teams several benefits, features and functionalities.

Advantages of Migrating from Silverlight to AngularJS

1. Angular JS is more modern than Silverlight. It provides feature-rich user experienced and benefits of responsive web designs which support multiple devices. Silverlight did not have this  quality.

2. Angular JS enables development of cross-platform mobile applications. Hence, there will be no need to develop separate applications for Windows, Mobile and Android platforms.

3. AngularJS supports two-way data binding while working on the display of real-time data. It also provides extended features such as routing, dependency injection, and animations.

4. AngularJS comes with important features that include thread-like form operations, APIS with  geolocation support, provision of client-side databases, audio/video embedding options, and  more.

5. AngularJS is  backed up by Visual Studio .NET IDE and IntelliJ IDE. It also provided extended features with some examples being routing, dependency injection, and animations.

How to Migrate?

This requires the services of an experienced app/wireframe migration company such as SGS Technologie. We have immense experience in migrating web applications from other frameworks to AngularJS. Besides, SGS’ team has subject-matter expertise in the latest versions of AngularJS. Get to us and we will give a comprehensive demonstration on the advantages of AngularJS and how the migration process can be customized according to your preferences.
