Data Warehousing

A data warehouse (DW) can be defined as an assembling of corporate information along with data that is derived from operational systems as well as from external sources. There is a clear line of difference between a data warehouse and a database. Data warehouses support business decisions by enabling data consolidation, analysis and reports at different aggregate levels. However, data warehousing is not meant to support regular reporting needs of a business and/or organization.

They do not have real-time performance requirements, similar to OLTP (Online Transactional Processing) data systems. Rather, a data warehouse will store data regarding all departments of a business such as its employee count, stock, expenses, sales, insurance, assets, and more.

Main advantage of data warehouse development is that all information can be easily accessed from one place whenever required.  They remove lack of storage space as well as maintain accuracy of information, as everything will be stored digitally. In addition, all information can be accessed within seconds as there will be no need to scan tons of paper files or check different systems.

It would be interesting to know that any new input of data or information will get stored instantly on data warehouses. That is, no manual entry or constant entry of data will be required.  This also ensures maximum accuracy and is achieved through continuous two-way communication between operational systems and data warehouses.

Any business change, such as an increase in prices or reduction of supply/inventory will first be prototyped and forecasted within a data warehouse environment for a business to reliably predict; next quantify the outcome. That is data warehouses will be able to assess business performance for the previous years as well as create strategies based on accurate predictions for the coming period of time.

How do Data warehouses work?

Data warehouses run on an extract, transform, load (ETL) basis. They employ staging, data integration and access layers during this process. Preside definitions of each stage are:

  • A staging layer (or staging database), which houses raw data generated from all sources.
  • An integration layer- Multiple data sets are combined and then could be moved to an operational data store (ODS) database.
  • A data warehouse database, where integrated data is put into hierarchical groups (or dimensions), facts and aggregate facts.
  • An access layer where hierarchical groups are placed together.

Advantages of Data Warehousing

  • Elaborate Insights into History Logs
  • Enhances Quality of Data
  • Boosts Efficiency
  • Fast Data Analytics
  • Good ROI.
  • Scalability
  • Interoperates with On-Premises and Cloud Hosting
  • Data Security
